The History of UMM

The University of Muhammadiyah Malang was found in 1964 and initiated by the figure of Muhammadiyah Leadership in Malang.
At the beginning the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) was affiliated with the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta established by Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah Jakarta with the Deed of Notary R.Sihojo Wongsowidjojo in Jakarta No. 71 on June 19 1963.

At that time the University of Muhammadiyah Malang had three faculties: Faculty of EconomicsFaculty of Law, and the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education which included the Islamic Education Department.
The three faculties obtained the registered status from Education and Culture Ministry, Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi, in 1966 by the Decree Number 68/B-Swt/p/1966 dated December 30 1966.

On July 1 1968 the University of Muhammadiyah Malang officially separated from the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ).
The management was separated by Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah Malang by the Deed of Notary R. Sudiono No. 2 on July 1 1968.
Furthermore, the Deed of Notary updated with the Notary G. Kamarudzaman No. 7 on June 6 1975 and updated again with the Deed of Notary Kumalasari S.H No. 026 on November 24 1988 and was registered in State Court Malang No. 88/PP/YYS/XI/1988 on November 28 1988.

In 1968 UMM added the Faculty of Social Welfare which became affiliated with the Faculty of Social Welfare of UMJ.
This became the fourth faculty at UMM.

The Islamic Education Department enrolled as the Faculty of Islamic Studies (Faculty of Tarbiyah) which was under the protection of the Religious Ministry.
In 1970 the Faculty of Tarbiyah obtained the same status as the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) from the Minister of Religious Decree Number 50 Year 1970.
That same year the Faculty of Social Welfare also changed its name to the Faculty of Social Science and Social Welfare Department.
In 1975 the Faculty of Social Science officially became independent (separated from UMJ) with the Registered Decree Number 002 A/1/1975 on April 16 1975.

During the years 1977 to 1980 more faculties were added to UMM which included: the Faculty of Engineering in 1977, Faculty of Agriculture in 1980, and the  Faculty of Animal Husbandry.
From 1983 to 1993 UMM added new departments and improved the status of existing ones.
In 1993 the University of Muhammadiyah Malang opened Post Graduate Programs such as Masters of Management and Masters of Sociology.

Up to the academic year 1994/1995 the University of Muhammadiyah Malang had nine faculties and 25 departments for Graduate Programs, two Masters Programs and one Diploma Program (D3-Nursing).
From 1983 to 1994 the most significant developments occurred.
From then on the development of UMM was very impressive and included improving the status of departments, the improvement of administration, the addition of facilities and the enlargement and improvement of staff quality in administration and academic.
In 2009 UMM merged the Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Animal Husbandry-Fishery which became the Faculty of Agricomplex in order to accord with the consortium of agriculture science.

There are three available campuses to support the teaching-learning process: Campus I in Jl. Bandung No. 1, Campus II in Jl. Bendungan Sutami No. 188a and Campus III in Jl. Raya Tlogo Mas.
To develop the quantity and quality of academic staff UMM employed young lecturers from various well-known universities in Java and improved the quality of the lecturers through funding for further studies both in Indonesia and abroad.

Finally the University of Muhammadiyah Malang transformed into the university of choice for students owing to its hard work.
UMM was recognized by Koordinator Kopertis Wilayah VII, through his speech at a Graduation of University of Muhammadiyah Malang on July 11 1992, that UMM had turned into a great university and had a prosperous future.

By continuously improving the University of Muhammadiyah Malang it became proud but humble and was ready to face the future for “mencerdaskan kehidupan bangsa”- educating the people of the nation and “membangun manusia Indonesia seutuhnya” - developing the Indonesian people to be dignified and compatible with other countries.
